okay... those who know me well know I'm about as domestic as a wild cat. I do however, cook.
My latest attempt at domestication was a rather nice cauliflower au gratin - from scratch which I'm going to share the recipe for, this way you can all have expanding waistlines. :P Don't let the name of the dish scare you, it's fairly simple to prepare and takes about 20 minutes prep to oven time.
Cauliflower Au Gratin ---------------------
Ingredients:
1 bag frozen cauliflower or one head of cauliflower cut into small florettes (blanched). Salt (to taste - undersalt a little as parmigiana cheese has some salt) Black Pepper (to taste) Cayenne Pepper (optional - a pinch for some extra heat) Garlic Powder (1/2 - 1 tsp) Nutmeg (at least a pinch, can use more if you want) 1 1/2 cups Swiss Cheese 1/2 cup Parmigiana Cheese 2 Cups Milk 2 Tbsp Butter 2 Tbsp Flour -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Melt butter in 2-3 quart saucepan over low heat. When butter is melted, whisk flour into melted butter. Allow to heat up and get bubbly - when flour smells a little nutty, add milk while whisking continually. Add spices once flour/butter roux is completely incorporated into milk and you see no lumps. Continue stirring while milk mixture comes to a boil. If sauce is TOO thick at this point, you can add a little more milk. Once boilage has occurred, add your cheeses. Taste - then add additional salt and pepper if necessary, and remove from heat.
Put cauliflower on bottom of large square baking dish. Pour cheese sauce over cauliflower and make sure it's spread to all edges and corners. Toss in 400 degree oven for 30-50 minutes dependent on how browned you want things. If you want nice crispy topping, make a mixture of bread crumbs and additional parmigiana cheese and sprinkle over top.

Whatever happened to the days of making taped duplicates of CD's we own, or perhaps duplicating a CD so we can take it into the car without the original melting in the summer heat? Perhaps there are those of us who would prefer to vote for an independent candidate could vote in the primaries for things other than local ordinances and officials. I'd love to see the US open to other political parties in a greater capacity than what we have currently. There are so many of our personal freedoms due to our government. This however, is completely reprehensible. With behaviour like this, I begin to wonder what will happen next. Will women lose their rights to vote? Will we become chattel again? Will homosexuality go back into the DSM-IV as a mental disorder?
We need to stand up for ourselves, use our voices, write letters. If you are able to open the mind of ONE single person, you've done a great job. We need to voice our displeasure, our distrust with voting machines, since it's not worth voting if our votes get changed, and we have NO paper trail for these machines. We need to be verified, but other than that there is no reason why a pharmacist should be rejecting a prescription. Matthew 7:1 states very simply "Judge not, lest ye be judged". It is NOT the place of these pharmacists to judge patients. They are there to know their medications,to fill prescriptions, to compound medications, to counsel patients about medications. They are not their to fling their personal beliefs about with wanton disregard. If I am correct, a prescription is filled. I understand where narcotics need to be productively angry!

I've been having an awful problem with sleeping as of late. This isn't something new for me, but I've been increasingly anti-social, getting upset beyond belief (and without reason) when something is moved on my desk at work, and ultra-sensitive to sensory stimuli, social phobia... these have all been lifelong problems, but after a period where I was starting to get burned out on work, and retreating further into myself and staying in my own little world as much as possible, I decided it was time to see a psychiatrist. The good news is, I'm not crazy, and I don't need to be medicated for anything other than sleep. The psych did give me a diagnosis that makes perfect sense - aspergers syndrome - esentially a rather high functioning autistic spectrum disorder. It's been referred to as the "geek disorder" since there's a large prevalence of it in areas where there are major tech centers (silicon valley, blacksburg virginia, etc).
The diagnosis makes PERFECT sense, especially remembering much of my early childhood and my obsession with painting black mice. This disturbed my kindergarten teacher, so I switched to only painting purple mice. Didn't help that I was a loner in kindergarten and afraid to interact with others and open up to others
When I printed out an article on aspergers, mom jokingly said that I didn't need a psychiatrist to diagnose it. She said that she could have diagnosed it herself if I'd have given her the article on it prior to my seeing a doctor.
Unfortunately, when I was in school, the diagnosis wasn't in the DSM-IV (or DSM-III for that matter). That wasn't put in until 1994, well after I was done with college. It was definitely a relief to me to find out that I'm not insane (just crazy in a positive manner)
For those willing to learn more about aspergers, here are some linkes:

On Logo network, tomorrow night (9, Aug 2007) will be a program at 9pm and 11pm EST called "Visible Vote 08". It's a forum for the current democratic candidates to voice their views on LGBT issues. I wish they'd do a similar show with the republican candidates. While it might not be the same celebration of diversity that the democratic candidates might show, but it would be nice to see both sides and know what us voters are up against.
On another note, It bothered me that the presidential candidate debates were not aired on standard broadcast channels, but on a cable channel instead. Poor coverage, and the debates are important for all of us to watch. No one wants to pre-empt tv anymore for these major events, and voters are going in quite uninformed. We can't have another 4 years with an idiot in office.
In addition, I'd like to voice my distaste for the current bipartisan system, and the electoral college. Thanks to the electoral college, it makes any vote for an independent candidate a wasted vote. :/ I'd love to see a primary where those of us who would prefer to vote for an independent candidate could vote in the primaries for things other than local ordinances and officials. I'd love to see the US open to other political parties in a greater capacity than what we have currently. There are so many of us who are registered as democrat or republican, simply for the ability to vote in the primaries. Many of us fall into true socialist or libertarian leanings, or green party for that matter. It's time for a major change, and hope all of us who have the strength to make changes do as much as possible. If you are able to have one person change their mind when enlightened to how our government and voting systems work, you've done your job. The more people, the better. It's kind of like the old Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo (the 1970's version - or was that Wella Balsam), with the "you tell 2 friends, we'll tell 2 friends, and they'll tell 2 friends", as the boxes on the screen keep multiplying. Sometimes we think that one person can't make a difference, but if we keep passing on our opinions and knowledge, we can... even if it takes longer.

While reading back through my blog posts, I realise they are a bit SCATHING. This isn't to say I'm retracting anything in these posts, but I do realise how bitter I might sound. I believe I have reason to be bitter, but I want to make a few points clear before I spread more political distaste.
1) While I do not follow a Judeo-Christian path, I am not anti-Christian. I am however, anti-Zealot. Religious fanaticism tends to be evil, no matter what religion it stems from. Religions that shun people of other belief systems fall under what I believe to be fanatical beliefs.
1a) The US has specific tenets about separation of church and state. What the GOP has done by embracing religious zealots is an abomination against our government, the constitution, and our human and civil rights in this country. We have so many different faiths in this country, the only way to promote tolerance is NOT to have religion in government. Please STOP trying to force a form of Christianity down EVERY US residents throat that precludes all other culture but their own, and all other beliefs than their own and while I'm at it, any other history, science or mathematics that isn't in The Bible. There are many pre-Christian faiths that were not obliterated during The Crusades that seem to peacefully coexist with history and science with no cultural detriment, so I think it's time the Fundies got their heads out of the clouds and stopped trying to change the value of Pi to 3.
2) While I am lesbian, I don't hate men. I do despise men who think that "one night with them will convert me", or that "I just haven't found the right man yet". I can have emotional closeness with a male, and have chosen to divert this into close friendships.. I cannot sexually be with a male. It's repugnant. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, and burned it in effigy. I fought feelings that were there for as far back as I could remember by hoping to find "the right male" and fit properly into society, and hurt a few people in the process because I couldn't accept myself. There is no right male for me, and it took me a long time to accept there is nothing wrong with me at all, I simply love differently than what is standard. Please learn to drop it or I will ask you when you've found the right $SAME-GENDER-PERSON, when I'm well aware you're straight.

I begin to wonder about the sanity of this country and whether or not Dubya is trying to turn our democratic republic into a theocracy. The most recent burr under my skin, The Federal Marriage Amendment that senate is about to vote on. Such an amendment is definitely a violation to separation of church and state, as it's a bill that has religious backing. I would also count it as a human rights violation as well.
Before I go on ranting, perhaps I should explain a bit about the Federal Marriage Amendment. This is a proposed constitutional amendment that will give a formal definition of marriage as being a union between one man and one woman. What is worrisome is the wording of the current amendment. This is a proposed amendment that has gone before senate several times before, and has been voted down. The current amendment has changed the wording and made it stronger, to where it can be interpreted to include civil unions as well as religious marriage.
The "Religious Right" feels that allowing gays to marry will cause destabilisation of society. I'm unsure of where people get this idea, other than fear and prejudice. The LGBT community has been fighting for civil unions and/or marriage not to destabilise society, but to allow us to have the legal protections that a marriage would allow. This is not a special right, but a right that every heterosexual person has, so why should it be any different for the LGBT community? We love, just as heterosexual people love, and we want to have the option to have our relationships legally recognised, instead of having to have insane amounts of legal paperwork drafted to protect our relationships as well as have to go through the financial burden it takes to get that legal recognition. Something again, that heterosexuals are granted the moment they utter the words "I do".
The sheeple of the "moral majority" tend to view people in the LGBT community as immoral, partly due to the fact that we have sex outside marriage - but there's a bit of a SNAFU, we're not allowed to marry. Interestingly enough, there's a very high divorce rate within the Christian fundamentalist groups. Shameful how when one group is fighting for what should be a right to any loving, monogamous couple, the other group is taking that right for granted, and moving from one marriage to another, often in rapid succession, frequently for the wrong reasons, like needing a father for their children.
The US is supposed to be a country with freedoms, but it seems as of late, the government is doing what they can to limit our freedoms. This FMA is yet another ploy to divide our country.
Senate will be voting on this, come June 6th. Please contact your senators, and your state representatives by using one of the links below. If this passes in senate, and you've read this afterwards, please use one of the below links, to contact your local representatives, since it will still have to pass in the House of Representatives.

I tend to be a bit politically outspoken, but lately, I read something that has me in a bit of an outrage. I keep joking around that if the Supreme court overturns Roe V. Wade, who knows what laws our government is going to try to inflict on our bodies next. They've already banned abortion in South Dakota, but they're taking things a step further. The people behind the abortion ban there, want to ban birth control! Sure, lets let the population in South Dakota SOAR, adding more idiots to the gene-pool, thereby diluting this countries intellect just a BIT further than it has already dipped due to poor education, and the ultra-religious zealotry the Bush administration is propagating.
Leslee Unruh and her nouvelle-pro-life movement want to promote abstinence only sex education. They have managed to get laws passed that will protect pharmacists and cashiers who want to push their morals over your medical wellbeing and your doctors decisions. Goddess help you if you are someone with irregular cycles and celibate in South Dakota. If they prescribe you the birth control pill for regulation there, good luck trying to get that prescription filled. They're even targeting married couples, not just unwed mothers and teens. Pro-life groups are attempting to get contraception labelled as abortifacients. Contraception keeps conception from happening, it is NOT an abortifacient. Get your facts straight, people! These are the same type of people who tried to have a bill passed that Pi=3, not 3.14159... Thank goodness that got laughed at.
Unruh's people also have a group called "Abstinence Africa" - They are discouraging condom usage in countries where an average of 1 in 4 people is HIV infected. It's been proven that in areas where abstinence only sex education is taught, the teen pregnancy rate and transmission of STD's is higher, basically because these people have not been taught how NOT to have children, and don't have enough self restraint to remain celibate. They're also not taught about safe sex. If Abstinence Africa has it's way, I believe 1 in 2 people will end up HIV infected instead of 1 in 4. Even the Catholic church has realised that condom use is a lesser evil than disease transmission, even though Das Pope has not made an official statement on that, simply that he is considering it - which is FAR more than the Catholic church has done in decades.
Hypothetically if the laws in South Dakota manage to make it to a federal level, what is next for us USians? Will we be forced to be microchipped? Forced Vaccinations? Forced psychiatric treatment for homosexuality? It's bad enough the fundamentalist zealots are trying to have rules placed on our bodies, but if our government continues in the same grain for much longer, there will no longer be a separation of church and state. These insane fanatics are trying to re-write science and math based on The Bible, with no scientific fact behind their changes other than their blind faith. Even the ultra-conservative Catholic Church breaks out in a rash at the mention on Intelligent Design, and believe that it should not be taught scientifically and should only be brought up philosophically.

Whatever happened to the days of making taped duplicates of CD's we own, or perhaps duplicating a CD so we can take it into the car without the original melting in the summer heat? Perhaps there are those of us who like to duplicate our DVD's so we don't end up scratching the original, or have careless friends who are known to damage the originals and not replace them?
We USED to be able to do all these things freely. Once we owned media, it was ours to do what we wanted with, provided we did not sell copies for a profit. These days there are winds of change blowing. These days with the advent of digital music, we no longer truly OWN music. We rent it. Most of the songs you download from commercial sites are heavily copy protected. Goddess help you if you have a hard drive crash. If you restore your music from a backup, it MAY or may not work all dependent on how many times you're able to copy it. If it is copied to another hard drive in your system, it may not work. This violates any concept of fair use policy we might have become accustomed to. I know there are legal precedents for fair use, primarily the betamax case, unfortunately the DMCA seems to supercede these precedents.
The DMCA is a vile piece of legislation which essentially grants copyright holders sweeping legal protection for technological access control measures, regardless of whether those access control measures are reasonable, fair, or justified by legitimate copyright enforcement concerns. With the most recent copyright problem I remember, namely being a recent Sony copy right protection scheme which installed a rootkit on windows and mac computers, it makes me wonder if soon copy protection measures will start "calling home" to ensure that copyrights aren't being violated. This frightens me. Will VCR's in the future require some type of internet connection to ensure that we aren't practicing "pre-emptive viewing"? Will I get arrested if I use anything other than a PVR supplied by my cable company?
If it seems our hands are already tied due to the DMCA and my postulations are a bit absurd, think again. It's about time to bend over and make sure you're well lubed. It appears that Rep Sensenbrenner is re-writing the DMCA to be tougher and tighter. It will be known as the 'Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2006'. There's nothing very intellectual about it, and if it passes, innocent people will be in for a world of trouble. It will be illegal to possess anything which may bypass copy protections. Which means, if you don't own a DVD player, and rip a movie to your hard drive so you don't have to hear your DVR-ROM make noises akin to a small plane taking off while you're watching the movie, you have just violated this proposed legislation. As a consumer in this country, it seems we no longer have rights.
Converse to this 'I.P.P.A. of 2006', there is the Digital Media Consumer Rights Act. The DMCRA was originally reintroduced in 2003, and reintroduced last year. It is meant to amend the DMCA to allow for consumer protections and fair use. I'm not sure why there is such an opposition to this bill in congress, since everyone in congress would be consumers as well, but there is. Will these people still feel the same when prices increase on CDs and DVDs exponentially? What will happen if one of their children is suddenly arrested for ripping a movie to their computer hard drive, or perhaps makes a duplicate of their DVDs? Will they still feel the same about not having consumer protections?
These laws are largely in place because of profit loss in the movie and music industries. I realise that some of this profit loss is due to piracy, but did anyone perhaps think that people no longer want to spend 13-18 dollars on a CD filled with 1 good track, and 15 tracks of utter rubbish, or hollywood movies that are remakes of remakes of movies. How many times can you REMAKE the same movie?! I haven't seen anything decent come out of hollywood for several years! The record and film companies are also losing money because more and more artists are going independent. They no longer want to deal with the rules and theivery of the big corporations. Quit trying to protect these large corporations. Protect the artists, protect the consumers, but please stop spoon feeding us crap. We're sick of watching it and sick of listening to it. Perhaps profits will go up if quality goes up. Stop making your target market 12 year olds. There are adults who love music, but don't want to listen to what the big-four labels are putting out. It all sounds the same.
Currently, we're looking at 10 years in jail for what the government views as piracy. The problem is what the government views as piracy, and without fair use, breaking copy protection so you can have a personal duplicate falls into that definition of piracy. The frightening thing is that piracy is viewed as being a worse crime than assault, and yes, CHILD PORN. Someone who is caught downloading the most vile form of pornography will get 7 years in jail. Someone who pirates music or a movie, 10 years. Something just isn't quite right here, and if a tightened DMCA goes into effect and there are copyright protection schemes that "call home", theoretically someone who makes personal duplicates, thinking it's fair use, you are viewed as being a worse criminal than someone who downloads child porn if you look at the sentences.

A Psychedelic Armageddon of Genesis, from The End to The Beginning
Once it was said, "Let there be light", at it was, and it was pretty okay. In the light was put a planet with animals, land, water and air. Then a scientist came and made dinosaurs and said a magician made them disappear.
The place exploded, and little mice became king kong, and man was born.
Man brought technology, civilisation, war and pestilence. man became doctors, lawyers and cowherders. Man became muggers, rapists and priests.
And the Priests and the Rabbis said "God is good, God is Great, God can Skate a figure eight", and then went to war over whether he was ice skating or roller skating.
Then the arabs came and made oil, which they used to hold-up the world and keep a gun to it's head. They said god was disco-ing and hated to skate. This got everyone mad, so Rambo went to Vietnam to show them how to be peaceful by blowing away the Communist scum in the name of truth, justice, and the associated press.
Then Ronald McDonald, President of the United Snakes of Kentucky Fried, said if Nicaraguans didn't wear levi's then he'd send in the marines.
In the meantime, the smog from the Yugo's covered the world and God could see nothing of what was going on, so he went to a resort on mercury to get a suntan.
Back on earth, rock singers put on concerts to feed starving Ethiopians who gave the money to the Russians because their power plants were leaving plutonium in Finland.
Law and disorder ruled every aspect of every life and 1986 became 1984.
God came home and saw His light gone grey, and the light said, "This is bullshit! Let there be darkness." And God pressed a button, and the light burned bright and turned into night.. And it was better.

I'm sure we've already heard about certain Wal-Marts and other pharmacies not wanting to fill prescriptions for birth control due to religious beliefs. Before I start on my rant, I've worked in the medical field since I was 18. Started as a hospital phlebotomist, did that while putting myself through the EMT program at the local community college. Continued to work as an EMT and phleb while finishing up my paramedic program, and for the past 10 years, I've been working mostly for doctors or as an ER tech. I've had a good 18 years experience in the medical field. I realise fully that this is not a field you go into to be morally judgemental. You are there to help preserve and assist the living, you are NOT there to make judgement calls, ever. Leave judgements up to the judicial system and $DEITY of your choice. Knowing this, you still run into patients with whom you may not agree with any facet of their life. You need to cast this aside, and do your best for this patient, despite the fact that you may clash on some very personal issues. Now that I've put my personal spin on things, here is the article that truly raised my hackles and aroused my need to rant.
Being lesbian, this will never personally affect me, but it still hits hard. As a woman, I want to ensure that any other woman is to have the right of control over their own body. I want to know that women are free to CHOOSE whether or not they are able to carry out a pregnancy, or terminate a pregnancy if that is their wish. What people don't seem to understand is that pro-choice is not a matter of being pro-abortion, but a matter of desire to keep the nations laws off of our own bodies. Remember, CHOICE. It is still possible to be pro-life and pro-choice at the same time, if you're able to look at things on a wider level than just yourself.
Lately, it's not even the government that is trying to take choice away from us. It is pharmacists who are allowing their morals to cloud their judgement.. It is a doctor who is the final say on whether or not a prescription is filled. I understand where narcotics need to be verified, but other than that there is no reason why a pharmacist should be rejecting a prescription. If I am correct, a prescription is also a legal document, as well as a written order from a physician. I also view this as countermanding medical orders. Should there not only be legal repercussion for this, but a mark against the pharmacist in question, if not a licensure review?
Its a sad state of affairs that we are giving up so many of our personal freedoms due to our government.
I realise that no one speaks absolutely perfect English, and while it is my first language, I'm still very analytical with syntax. I find great amusement with direct translation, particularly with the online translation facilities such as babelfish, and freetranslation.com, but the most fun until recently was engrish.com. While not a translation site, it shows how poorly asian languages get translated into English. Recently I've come across a few sites that make engrish.com look tame.
Would you eat this? Or this?
If you thought those were good, how about the new Star Wars film? Backstroke of the West"
When all else fails, if you need some original self amusment, try this
